The next time you are on the Pilates reformer struggling through a particularly heavy arm series, just think to yourself, What would Ed Sheeran do? The answer to that question, I learned today, is that he would push through it in order to achieve a new, jacked physique. Sheeran was on the cover of Men’s Health on Friday to announce to the world that he is newly swole and all the steps he took to get there. “I kept joking that I was gonna do a Men’s Health cover, then one day was just like ‘why not,’” the singer wrote on Instagram.
The result is a lengthy profile about Sheeran’s fitness journey, which includes weight lifting, running, and the aforementioned reformer Pilates. Sheeran became a dad in 2020, which apparently prompted him to change his “beer-guzzling, kebab-munching smoker” ways.

“I remember Lyra was two weeks old and I had my best mate round and we had a bottle of wine. I went to bed, then Lyra woke up 20 minutes after I’d fallen asleep,” Sheeran told the magazine. “I woke up and I was like, ‘Fuck, I probably shouldn’t drink if I’m going to feel this dreadful,’ I want to be able to do the night stuff. It all came in at the same time of wanting to be a responsible dad, wanting to feel and look good.”

Not to be a perv, but he does look good. Whether or not Sheeran is hot is not for me to litigate, but he is, at the very least, undeniably shredded. He credited much of that to the reformer, which he said is his preferred method of exercise while touring. “After the show last night, the last thing I want to do today is bench press and deadlift,” he explained. “So this is a really gentle way to still have the same level of exercise and feel like I’ve burnt calories, but I’ve also stretched.”
Shout-out to Sheeran, who really understands the appeal of classical Pilates. Clearly, it’s working out really well for him.
