On most days, Elmo’s X account is a heartwarming corner of the internet where the furry red monster can be found celebrating teachers and postal workers and occasionally hanging out with Ms. SZA. But on Sunday, it briefly became … something else. After an apparent hack, the verified account shared a number of posts — one of which was written in the muppet’s signature third-person style — calling for violence against Jews.
In other posts, Elmo invoked conspiracy theories about the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, calling for Donald Trump to “RELEASE THE FILES” and calling the president a “CHILD FUCKER.”

The posts were deleted shortly after they went up, but screenshots have been circulated widely. In a statement after the incident, a spokesperson for Sesame Workshop clarified that the account had been hacked. “Elmo’s X account was compromised today by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts,” the spokesperson told the Cut, adding that they were “working to restore full control of the account.” Sounds like Elmo will be back to posting about hugs soon.
