During the Eras Tour, there was no place quite like the VIP tent. Week after week, celebrities you’d never expect to cross paths were showing up to dance to “Love Story” together, often somewhere near Travis Kelce, who was one of the most frequent attendees. Kelce brushed shoulders with all sorts of A-listers there, including Greta Gerwig, who attended the tour’s second night in London in June 2024 and who was seen singing along to “Shake It Off” with Kelce in video clips.
But apparently — despite being a huge Gerwig fan — Kelce had no idea whom he was getting down to this sick beat with. In an interview with Seth Meyers on Wednesday, Taylor Swift revealed that Kelce had quite the mix-up that night. Ahead of the show, Swift said she told Kelce that Gerwig would be there. “He was like, ‘Oh my God, I really want to tell her how funny I thought Barbie was,’” she recalled.

After the show, Swift asked Kelce how meeting Gerwig went. Not great, Kelce told her — he’d made an “I’m just Ken” joke, and she smiled politely but didn’t really engage. “I was like, ‘That’s very out of character, but maybe she has heard that joke too many times,’” Swift said. Kelce also noted that Gerwig spent much of the night dancing with Hugh Grant and said the two seemed very close. “‘They kind of seem like they’re, like, soul mates,’” Swift said Kelce had told her. “I was like, ‘The tea is crazy tonight, Travis.’” Fortunately, Kelce said he still had a fabulous time dancing with some family he didn’t catch the names of.
Then she opened her phone and saw video after video of Kelce with Gerwig. “All over the internet is just videos of Travis dancing with Greta, all night, like they’re best friends,” she said. “And I’m like, ‘Travis, here’s a video of you with Greta. It feels like she thought the joke was funny!’ And he goes, ‘Oh, that’s not Greta.’”

That’s how Swift figured out why Kelce’s joke didn’t exactly land. “Is there any chance at all, baby, that you complimented Hugh Grant’s wife, Anna, on her movie Barbie, said, ‘I’m just Ken too,’ and she politely nodded because she didn’t have the heart to tell you she didn’t direct it?” Swift recalled asking Kelce. “And is there any chance that the people that look like soul mates are Hugh Grant and his soul mate?’”
That is indeed exactly what happened. The good news is Kelce’s joke couldn’t have gone too badly, even if it left Grant’s wife a little confused. After the show, Grant tweeted his thanks to Swift for putting on a great show and noted that he and his family had a blast with her “excellent if gigantic boyfriend.” He really is just Ken.
