Nothing sounds more idyllic to me than spending long, lazy days holed up in a cute little cottage nestled in the French countryside. The kind with rustic stone floors, copper pots hanging in the kitchen, and gorgeous French doors you can throw open to let in the sunshine. When life gets hectic, that’s the kind of vacation I dream about. Although I won’t be escaping to a rural French cottage this summer, I can channel that countryside charm at home. And it seems like I’m not the only one yearning for the French provincial lifestyle right now.
According to Etsy’s spring/summer trend report, decor inspired by the French countryside is set to be this season’s next big home trend. Etsy searches for French cottage decor are up over 26,000% compared to last year, making it one of the site’s top searched terms of the year so far. If the last few summers were all about romanticizing the bright, splashy Mediterranean way of life, this trend is essentially tomato girl summer’s older, more elegant (but no less romantic) cousin.

Like the cottagecore aesthetic we all know and love, French cottage decor is rooted in nature. It relies on muted colors and natural materials that reflect the surrounding landscape, so you’ll see a lot of dusty blues, soft neutrals, and materials like stone, wood, and terracotta. And because this trend is inspired by the French, it’s all about simplicity and relaxed elegance.
