For the past 24 hours, every piece of news has made me want to go, “AHHHHH!!!!!!!!” The average celebrity might take a look at the news cycle right now and think, Maybe I’ll take a break from promoting my upcoming project. Maybe I’ll wait until there’s a little more oxygen in the room. Well, Taylor Swift is not the average celebrity.
On Thursday, Swift plowed along with her regularly scheduled programming, releasing yet another countdown on her website tied to the upcoming The Life of a Showgirl. Actually, if we’re being specific, it’s a progress bar that will eventually reveal a countdown, I think. The whole thing is kind of confusing. On Swift’s website, she’s asking fans to pre-save the album, and when enough of them do so, it will “unlock the newest countdown page clip from The Life of a Showgirl.”
What, exactly, is a “countdown page clip”? Who knows! Ambiguity aside, the Swifties reported for duty and locked in. Shortly after being given their assignment, they were already inspecting the code on the website to see how much progress had been made.

Based on their calculations, the progress bar is currently hanging out at around 50 percent, so we may have to wait a while before we get to see … whatever it is that Swift is promoting. I think it’s probably another photo of her in a showgirl outfit, but I’d love to be wrong. Maybe it’ll be a video of Swift in a showgirl outfit.
I understand that Swift loves to promote her albums like mad, releasing enough versions and vinyl variants to secure her No. 1 spot on the Billboard chart for weeks and weeks. But maybe she could take a breather just for today. Everyone can regroup next week, when the copywriters have had a moment to compose themselves and the all-consuming political tension dissipates just a little bit. That way, it’ll really hit when Swift announces a limited-edition version of the album that only plays at Capital One Cafés.
