Welp, she did it. Rosie O’Donnell has officially moved off of American soil and landed on the great green grass of Ireland. The comedian made the move on January 15 and says that since then, things have been pretty wonderful. “The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming, and I’m very grateful,” she said in her announcement on TikTok. Must be nice.
This move makes sense for her. O’Donnell has had a well-documented feud with President Donald Trump since the early 2000s, and the real-life consequences of Project 2025 are upon us. While she didn’t mention Trump by name, O’Donnell says that moving to Ireland — or anywhere abroad — wasn’t something she thought she’d be doing, but she came to the conclusion that it was the best option for her and her 12-year-old child, Clay, given the circumstances.
But of course, there are downsides. “I miss my other kids, I miss my friends, I miss many things about life there at home,” she said. She’s currently in the process of obtaining her Irish citizenship since her grandparents come from the country. Sláinte!
As far as whether or not they’ll make a return to the U.S., who’s to say. “When it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back,” she said. “It’s been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well.” Same. If only everyone could afford to ride out Trump’s regime in the land of Guinness and Aran sweaters.
Fleeing the U.S. seems to be popular among celebrities amidst Trump’s takeover. But who else would move to the Emerald Isle? If I had to guess, I’d probably put my money on our Irish queen, Ayo Edebiri. It just feels right, you know?
