Months before Aubrey Plaza’s husband, Jeff Baena, died by suicide, the couple had reportedly separated. According to a coroner’s report obtained by People, Plaza and Baena had been experiencing “recent marital difficulties” that prompted their separation in September 2024. Per the report, Baena made “concerning remarks” to Plaza in October, who then asked a friend to “perform a welfare check on her husband.” Baena allegedly started going to therapy after the welfare check, two months before he was found dead at the age of 47.
Compiled by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner coroner, the report also noted that Plaza received a final text from Baena at 10:36 a.m. on January 3, the day of his death. His body was reportedly discovered by his dog walker, and law enforcement later ruled the death a suicide.
Baena, an indie filmmaker who often collaborated with Plaza, first began dating Plaza in 2011, and they married in May 2021. In a statement released in January, Plaza and Baena’s family called the loss an “unimaginable tragedy.”
