Aside from the Met Gala, the Cannes Film Festival is the most glamorous event of the year (in our opinion, at least). The red carpet often serves as a stage for luxury fashion houses to debut their most extravagant bespoke gowns and jewels on A-list talent, since many of them collaborate with the festival or invest as official partners. The list of unforgettable Cannes Film Festival red-carpet looks is extensive, from Princess Diana in a blue silk-chiffon dress by Catherine Walker in 1987 and Madonna in a Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra in 1991 to Bella Hadid in a gold-dipped Schiaparelli bronchial tree necklace that broke the internet in 2021 and Natalie Portman in custom Dior, inspired by the house’s famous Junon design, in 2023. This year, the highly anticipated movies include Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest, Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, Oliver Hermanus’s The History of Sound, and Harris Dickinson’s directorial debut Urchin.

What is the Cannes Film Festival dress code?

The festival announced that nudity, voluminous outfits, and long trains are prohibited this year (eye roll). Cannes has had an unspoken rule that women are supposed to wear heels on the red carpet, but that was challenged many times: In 2016, Julia Roberts and Sasha Lane went barefoot, and in 2018, Kristen Stewart took off her Christian Louboutin pumps on the red carpet of the festival premiere of BlacKkKlansman.
