Congratulations are in order for the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team. Last night, the Huskies won the 2025 NCAA championship 82-59 against the tournament’s No. 1 seed and reigning champs, the South Carolina Gamecocks, in their first title win since 2016. The last time these two teams faced off in 2022, the Gamecocks secured the national title, and this time, the Huskies got their revenge.
Their win was in part thanks to senior guard Paige Bueckers who scored 17 points in a final blaze of glory. While her college basketball years may be over, team captain Bueckers’s career is just beginning. After winning her first championship, she’s expected to be the WNBA’s No. 1 draft pick in just one week on April 14. What a way to end your senior year.
UConn students aren’t the only ones celebrating the team’s win. Barack Obama tweeted out his support on X, writing, “Congratulations to Coach Auriemma, Paige Bueckers, Sarah Strong, Azzi Fudd and all the Huskies for winning the NCAA Championship!” Vanessa Bryant paid tribute to the team and her late daughter on Instagram. “Gigi would’ve loved being there with you. ‘When you think you can’t, UCONN’ ~ Gianna Bryant,” she wrote.
In a video posted to the UConn Athletics official Twitter account, Breanna Stewart, a current New York Liberty forward who led the Huskies to their last victory in 2016, commended the team. “Congrats to this year’s Huskies on winning the national championship, twelfth one in program’s history,” she said. “So happy to be here, so proud of everybody, and now it’s time to party.” Time to party indeed.
