Following this year’s Oscars ceremony, the stars of Tinseltown convened at Vanity Fair’s annual after-party on Sunday night. Typically known for its ultra-exclusive guest list and celebrity-couple debuts, this year’s VF soirée also sparked controversy, thanks to a questionable interview comedian Hannah Berner conducted with Megan Thee Stallion.
Known for a stint on Summer House and the Netflix special We Ride at Dawn, Berner and her Giggly Squad co-host Paige DeSorbo (also of Summer House fame) were tapped as VF’s carpet correspondents for the evening. When it came time to speak to Megan, both women started fangirling and talking over the rapper. While DeSorbo said she always starts her day with a little Megan, Berner took the conversation in a different direction, saying, “Your music has literally made me, like, when I want to fight someone, I listen to your music.”
On Thursday, Berner posted an apology to her Instagram Story:
Interviewing Megan Thee Stallion was a dream of mine. I love her music and it’s my go to whenever I need to boost my confidence before a show. Looking back at the interview, I wish I used any other word except ‘fight’ to describe how her songs impact me. It was a careless choice of words and though there was no ill intent, I recognize and acknowledge that what I said has a deeper meaning and I am so sorry to Megan. I appreciate everyone who brought this to my attention.
Vanity Fair has not yet issued a statement about the interview. The Cut has reached out to representatives for the outlet and Megan Thee Stallion for comment and will update this post if we hear back.
